Mediterranean Garden Society, Portugal - Spring 2014 Conference

Here at last is the information about our third Spring Conference. I apologise for the later arrival of this than we would have liked but this is a very varied programme with wonderful speakers. We are very pleased that Roy Lancaster has once again agreed to come and join us. He will talk on one of his very favourite subjects, Trees ! Roy comments: "I have been excited by trees since my childhood, when climbing them offered both a challenge and an escape from boredom. Since then they have fuelled and fulfilled my wildest dreams".

The conference also has a new feature this year, discussion periods with our speakers and also organised wild flower walks. There is an emphasis on aloes and agaves with special speakers coming from the UK. All provide long term drought tolerant planting for maximum impact and low maintenance. There will also be the usual opportunities to exchange gardening news and stories. As last year we will base the conference at the Five Star Sheraton Pine Cliffs resort near to Albufeira. A paisagem continua a ser hoje um dos mais populares géneros pictóricos, e designadamente entre os que à partida menos apreciam a arte contemporânea. O reconhecimento do "objecto representado" permite vencer a resistência do observador perante a arte actual de que genericamente lamentam a "ilegibilidade". Mas se esse reconhecimento facilita a aproximação, não é menos certo que o interesse advém da ligação com a natureza que todos, criadores e fruidores, possuímos.

A relação entre arte e paisagem tem gerado ao longo dos últimos séculos uma abundante produção artística e os artistas exprimem através dela uma relação particular, idiossincrática com o mundo, designadamente com os espaços rurais e naturais.

Na sequência da exposição Paisagem nas Colecções do CAM e do Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis apresentada no ano passado no Museu de Évora pretende-se agora prolongar essa reflexão através de um conjunto de obras no geral muito recentes e em grande parte inéditas.

As obras que integram esta exposição interrogam a realidade, ilustrando diferentes “olhares” sobre o mundo e a natureza. Confrontam-se diferentes propostas artísticas que numa evidente diversidade estética traduzem uma modificação da relação da arte com a natureza, celebrando-a, interrogando-a ou reflectindo sobre as consequências da intervenção humana sobre ela.
